HEL Advocate Brakes Review – Powerful, Consistent, and Built for Serious Riding

I’ve been running the HEL Advocate brakes on my bike for the last six months, and in that time they’ve seen pretty much everything: wet winter slop, rocky descents, long fire-road drags, tight tech, and everything in between. After half a year of riding with them (and installing on them in the workshop), I’ve got a clear picture of what they’re like to live with. Spoiler: they’re very good.

HEL are well known in the motorsport world, so I was curious to see how their engineering approach would carry over to mountain biking. From the moment you pick these brakes up, it’s obvious they’ve taken it seriously.

Build Quality & First Impressions

The first thing that hits you is the machining. Everything is CNC’d cleanly, the edges are sharp in a good way, and nothing feels cheap or mass-produced. The levers and calipers are solid, the hardware is good quality, and even the anodising looks and feels premium. They also include a metal bleed block, which is a nice touch.

One thing riders will appreciate is the amount of customisation available. HEL offer a wide range of anodised colour options, so you can keep things subtle or go full custom depending on your style. They also offer two braided hose finishes, carbon and clear, which lets you fine-tune the look of your setup even more. The anodising and hose finish both hold up really well to mud, washing and general abuse.

Overall, they give the impression of a brake made with pride, not just another product added to a catalogue.

Power & Performance on the Trail

On the trail, the Advocates feel strong and confidence-inspiring straight away. The power comes on smoothly, without that sudden grabby feeling some brakes can have. You squeeze the lever and the braking force builds in a predictable, controlled way, which makes it easier to settle into the braking zone without upsetting the bike.

I’ve used them in wet weather, steep terrain and long descents, and they’ve handled everything without any fuss. Whether you’re crawling through a slow, awkward rock section or coming in hot to a bigger feature, the brakes feel consistent and trustworthy.

Modulation & Control

Modulation is one of the real highlights here. You can feather the brakes lightly over roots or slick surfaces without locking up, but you can also dig in harder when you need more stopping force. The lever gives you a very clear sense of what the caliper is doing.

This makes them great for:

  • steep, rocky chutes

  • tight switchbacks

  • greasy winter root webs

  • controlled braking before technical features

They help keep the bike calm and predictable, which is exactly what you want when things get sketchy.

Lever Feel

The lever feel is firm and positive, in a good way. The bite point stays consistent, so you don’t get that wandering or unpredictable engagement you sometimes find with other brakes.

A few highlights:

  • Comfortable shape for one-finger braking

  • Minimal free stroke

  • Crisp engagement

  • Easy reach adjustment

  • Same lever feel at the end of the ride as the start

It all adds up to a very connected, confidence-boosting feel.

Heat Management

On long, continuous descents, the Advocates stay impressively stable. Once they’re properly bedded in, the braking feel barely changes even after repeated hard braking.

You can expect:

  • consistent performance

  • no fade

  • no spongey feeling

  • solid lever feel even when things get hot

They clearly handle heat very well, which is important for riders who spend a lot of time in steep or rocky terrain.

Installation & Workshop Friendliness

From a mechanic’s point of view, these brakes are a pleasure to work with.

Some positives:

  • Simple bleed procedure using a SRAM bleed kit

  • DOT 5.1 fluid (good performance and availability)

  • Tidy hose routing

  • Well-made fittings

  • Solid hardware

They feel like a product designed by people who understand what it’s like to work on bikes, not just ride them.

Value & Purpose

The Advocates are clearly designed to be a high-performance brake for riders who take their riding seriously. They’re strong, predictable, and built to last.

They’ll suit riders who want:

  • reliable braking in steep terrain

  • consistent lever feel

  • a strong, confident bite

  • premium machining and construction

  • something properly engineered rather than mass-produced

They feel like brakes you can trust when the trail gets rough or the speed creeps up.

Who They’re Best For

Great for riders who:

  • ride technical or steep trails

  • want predictable, confidence-inspiring braking

  • value premium build quality

  • want consistent performance all year round

  • appreciate good machining and solid engineering

These are performance brakes built for riders who genuinely care about how their bike works and feels.

Final Verdict

After six months of riding, the HEL Advocate brakes have really impressed me. They’re powerful, consistent and incredibly well made. The modulation is excellent, the lever feel is solid, and they inspire confidence in every situation I’ve put them in.

If you’re looking for a high-quality, UK-made brake with a refined feel and proper engineering behind it, the Advocates are well worth considering.
